Dr. Money and the Boy with No Penis
When David Reimer was born he was born as a twin to Brian Reimer on August 22, 1906. Neither had been born with any complications. Everything had went well in the birthing. When the boys were scheduled for circumcision surgery Bruce (who changed his name to David in later life) was the first to be operated on. During the surgery there was a complication with the electrical equipment which has caused his penis to be burnt off. His parents reached a tough decision of raising Bruce as a girl and forever changing his gender for the rest of his life testing the experiment of Nature vs. Nurture.
Dr. Money acknowledged the procedure and responded to the parent's call for help. He suggested that they raise Bruce as a female and change his name. Bruce turned into Brenda and was raised as a girl. Brenda was raised as an intersex before she was castrated at the age of two. Where she could no longer produce male hormones. As Brenda grew older she became able to find out her gender identity. She loved boy toys and avoided dolls and barbies. At the age of seven Dr. Money had suggested that she have a vagina constructed as the final stage of changing her sex permanently. Brenda started acting more masculine around the age of eight. Her gender expression changed to where she wore boy clothes, acted like a boy, wanted to be a boy and knew deep down that's who she should be. It was enough to change her sexual orientation because she knew who she was. At the age of fourteen her parents revealed to her that she was born a boy and she came out and accepted that life changing event. She then turned herself back into a boy with a surgery reconstructing a penis and changing her name to David. Dr. Money's experiment of Nature vs. Nurture had failed when David's parents couldn't raise him as a girl.
After the procedure to change genders back David had tried to life a normal life. He had found a wife and adopted his wife's two kids due to the fact that he couldn't produce any sperm to make any children of his own. His wife had decided that she needed some separation time away from her husband but stated that she didn't want a divorce. But it had still hurt David which contributed to the depression he developed shortly after. Brian, his twin brother, had developed schizophrenia which had made life more difficult for the family.
Dr. Money had continued his experiment by sharing it as success. The Reimer family had made a documentary of the truth and released it to the public. The plan to ruin Dr. Money had backfired onto the family. Brian had passed away shortly after the documentary which added more grief onto the family. After the documentary was released David had gotten depressed and was unable to live a normal life. At age 38 he had been found in a store parking lot after he had committed suicide.
Dr. Money's Nature vs. Nurture Contribution to the Psychology World:
Dr. Money had viewed the study of the Reimer twins as a psychological advancement. He had showed the world that nature will eventually take over nurture. Even if the child is raised as a girl nature will overpower how she is raised and she will slowly act like a boy and the body's hormones will take over to who they really are.
Did Dr. Money help or hurt the process? Explain?
Dr. Money hurt the process due to the fact that he had traumatically affected David's childhood. He had made David take off his clothes and view his private parts to distinguish that he was a girl. Dr. Money had but David through forceful situations that had pushed David into an uncomfortable state.
